Zoey’s Maternity Session

By Jennifer Renée Johnson · 3 min read

Not every maternity session is soft and airy — some are moody, black and white, and unapologetically about the body that made all of it possible. Zoey’s session was exactly that.

When Zoey came in for her studio session, she was clear about what she wanted, and I loved her for it: “My goal is to get a good mixture of family and friendly photos, but also moody photos capturing just all my body has done in pregnancy.”

That’s exactly what we built the session around. A mix of warm, connected images — the kind you’ll want on the wall, the kind that includes the people who mattered through this pregnancy — alongside something more introspective. Black and white. Quiet. Unfiltered. Not a body being hidden or softened, but one being honored for what it had actually done.

This is one of my favorite parts of maternity work — every woman wants something a little different from this chapter, and there’s room for all of it. Soft and warm. Moody and honest. Sometimes, like with Zoey, both at once.

If you’re picturing your own maternity session — whatever mix of warm and moody speaks to you — let’s talk about your session. And if we haven’t met yet, you can meet your photographer first.
